Let’s Spring into Sports!

What a week it has been! Spring sports are back and many schools have been participating at the 2024 Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. This is the 20th year for the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic and some of the top NCAA softball teams are playing. There are 31 schools competing in this tournament which started on February 22 and ends today. One of the top games to see today is No. 19 UCLA vs. No. 5 Tennessee.  Here are some notable moments from the four day tournament event.

The UCLA vs. Tennessee game is the final evening of competition at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. UCLA was rolling through with wins and highlights until Baylor defeated them on Saturday night. The Bruins have young pitching stars who made a huge impact on the game. Kaitlyn Terry led the team to a 10-2 mercy rule victory over Illinois. Taylor Tinsley allowed zero earned runs and struck out a career-high 11 batters in the loss to Baylor.

Strong pitching led Tennessee to two wins on Saturday. Graduate Payton Gottshall and sophomore Karlyn Pickens got the job done and their pitching dominated the stories of the game. Gottshall struck out nine of 24 batters, walked none and allowed just one run on four hits. Pickens struck out a career-high 14 batters, tossed a complete game shutout, scattered six hits and walked two.

The Oklahoma Sooners are starting off strong and keeping their historic win streak alive. Oklahoma has the longest win streak in NCAA D1 Softball history. The Sooners are 13-0 this season which gives them a win-streak of 66 games. Prior to Oklahoma’s win-streak, Arizona held the record at 47 wins from April 5, 1996 to March 23, 1997. Oklahoma took the title for the last three seasons and have maintained an amazing record, but will their luck continue?

Florida State Softball player, Michaela Edenfield, never hit a walk-off in her life and yesterday she hit two. Edenfield was recently named USA Softball’s Player of the Year Top 50 watchlist.

Ball State Softball player, Mckenna Mulholland’s did not shy from getting her white uniform dirty and made an epic dive at second base, securing an out against Kennesaw State. This play landed on Sportscenter’s Top 10 plays and came in at No.8. Broadcasters called it the “Mulholland Dive”.

As the crack of the bat and the roar of the crowd fill the air, college softball brings an electrifying display of athleticism, passion, and camaraderie to every game. With each pitch, catch, and slide, these dedicated athletes showcase their talent and determination, making every moment unforgettable. Spring is nearly here so don’t miss out – tune in and experience the excitement for yourself!
